The contents of my freezer

So, as many of you know, the yomim tovim (holidays) are fast approaching. Being fortunate enough to have both a kid and a job, my time is not exactly plentiful, and since I am going to have guests to feed at no less than sixteen (count 'em) festive meals, there is no way to leave this to the last minute. What's an uberimma to do? She cooks ahead and freezes, of course, in a time-honored tradition dating back through the generations as least as far back as the founding of the Frigidaire company.

The freezer, I am happy to say, is filling up. It now contains two roasts, two chickens, six quarts of chicken soup, a hundred and something meatballs (I made a hundred and fifty, but we ate some), six dozen chocolate chip cookies, two pans of three-layer kugel, a pan of potato kugel, and probably some other stuff I forgot. Last night, I made nine pans of kugel (three different recipes), two chickens, challah, chicken soup, four dozen cookies, and, um, I think that's it. But a lot of that is getting eaten over the course of the next day, since we are having guests tonight and tomorrow.

So, what is my current dead-of-night fear?

A power outage.

wow! I'm going to leave soon to buy food for today and was feeling quite noble about actually cooking my own meals. I don't think I can handle thinking about 16 festive meals in advance! The two for today was hard enough! (Sandwich and Tuna Salad a la Kate in case you were wondering.)

How big is your freezer?

16 meals? Why 16 meals? A lot of guests, or 16 separate occasions? And, if the latter, what?

Oh, and thanks to mamabubby, I now have the fiercest craving for latkes (with sour cream AND apple sauce, in case you're wondering how I like 'em). And not a deli to be found in all of Barstow ... I have to say, the worst thing about going from a bustling metropolis to a small country town is the sudden reduction in restaurant options. Sigh.

jasmin - I'm pretty sure she means 16 separate occasions. I can count 22 discrete festive meals for the month of October/Tishrei, including Shabbatot (though not seudah shlishit on Shabbat) and the pre- and post-fast meals on Yom Kippur. I guess if you leave out pre- and post-fast, and host only one meal per Shabbat, that's 16?

I haven't even started cooking for Rosh Hashana yet, though I certainly will have to at least plan out menus by the end of the day today. We are hosting only two of the four meals, but there will be about a dozen people at each so there's a lot of food to make. I can't even begin to think about Sukkot yet...

Thanks, shanna! Oh, all those yummy-sounding meals you're all cooking, and I won't be at any of them! :P

Well, you can invite yourself over for latkes any time. Maybe you can get the helicopters guys to make a pit stop. I need warning to have both applesauce and sour cream on hand, though... :)
